Napa Valley’s Carneros Spa undergoes US$3.5m spa renovation
POSTED 17 Jul 2018 . BY Jane Kitchen
Designed by Oakland-based firm Nina Ciappa Interiors and design firm TLCD Architecture, the spa includes a new entrance, airy guest reception and retail space
Carneros Resort and Spa in Napa Valley, California, has transformed the 5,919sq foot spa after a US$3.5m (€3m, £2.7m) renovation.

Designed by Oakland-based firm Nina Ciappa Interiors and design firm TLCD Architecture, the spa includes a new entrance, airy guest reception and retail space, expanded relaxation area, and newly designed treatment rooms and suites.

“We are constantly striving to enhance the guest experience at Carneros Resort and Spa and offer the highest quality amenities in Napa Valley,” said Edward Costa, managing director of the resort. “The spa renovations reflect the resort coming full circle since its rebranding and renovations in 2016 and is the last piece to establishing the property’s identity as a ‘destination resort’.”

The Spa renovations are described as a “sophisticated modern farmhouse design”, and the spa’s outdoor entrance is adorned with a Mediterranean-style garden with a central water fountain, benches, lounge chairs and planted trellis.

The spa interior features elements of rift-cut stained oak, ivory-colored walls, limestone patterned floors, chevron pattern oak cabinets and black iron accents. Upon entering the spa, a 26-foot open ceiling exposes a centre tower, creating a dramatic visual experience that balances the farmhouse architecture.

“We exposed the center tower and support beams to establish a focal architectural element that incorporates the existing footprint of the building and reinforces the modern farmhouse theme,” said Nina Chiappa, designer of the project. “Every element, from the architectural aspect to the finish, furniture and fabric are interrelated.”

The co-ed relaxation area comprises an enlarged indoor space, which flows into an outdoor deck. Located adjacent from guest reception by raffia patterned glass, the indoor relaxation area is anchored by a fireplace, built-in bookshelves, and cozy lounge furniture. The private outdoor relaxation deck mirrors the entrance with a wisteria covered trellis, central water element, and contemporary chaise lounges.

The Spa at Carneros Resort has nine indoor treatment rooms, including a new couple’s suite and a specialty studio suite. The couple’s suite features a private outdoor deck, soaking tub and solarium shower, while the specialty suite boasts its own sauna, indoor shower and a private covered porch.

Women’s and men’s locker rooms have been reconfigured to feature new oak wood lockers, pebble shower floors, steam rooms, as well as indoor and outdoor showers with sliding barn doors and etched privacy glass.

Each treatment room is outfitted with light wood flooring, new massage tables, furnishings and equipment, and coloured with deep green tones. A new lighting programme installed sets the mood for each area of the spa, from minimising lighting in the individual treatment rooms for deeper relaxation to producing improved natural lighting in the co-ed relaxation area.

Surrounded by rolling farmlands, the reimagined spa menu highlights ingredients reflective of the natural abundance of wine country and Carneros Resort and Spa’s half-acre Culinary Garden.

New treatments such as the Body Botany massage begins with an antioxidant rich body scrub and a choice of ingredients and corresponding benefits, including the immune boosting olive leaf and rosemary scrub; refreshing coffee, lemon and shea butter scrub; and the nourishing hibiscus and blood orange scrub. The Tune Me Up tri-sensory experience guides guests through an infrared sauna, a DIY scrub, and relaxation in an anti-gravity chair in the specialty studio.
