New York's Smoke Free Air Act will be extended to cover city parks, recreation centres and beaches after the measure was approved by the local authority.

The legislation will also encompass pedestrian areas such as the iconic Times Square, along with all properties and facilities under the jurisdiction of the city's Parks Department.

It is hoped the extension of the Smoke Free Air Act, which already covered restaurants and bars, will lead to a reduction in the amount of rubbish.

Council of the City of New York speaker Christine C Quinn said: "No one should have to inhale deadly cigarette smoke when they go to a park or beach.

"This summer, when people visit our beautiful parks and beaches, they will be able to relax and not worry about dodging deadly second-hand smoke."

Council member Gale Brewer added: "This is common sense legislation and in the long run this will help New Yorkers become healthier."
