The Capella Hotel Group has officially launched Patina Osaka, marking the brand’s debut in Japan with an entire floor dedicated to wellness.

The Patina brand is Capella’s luxury hotel brand that promises a destination within a destination for guests to find meaningful connections with themselves and their surroundings.

The 221-key Patina Osaka is the second Patina-branded hotel to open, following Patina Maldives, Fari Islands, which launched in 2021.

Inspired by the design of the nearby Osaka Castle, Patina Osaka’s interior spaces have been designed to reflect “kisetsukan” – the Japanese art of seasonal awareness – with areas that flow in harmony with nature.

Patina Wellness

One such space for meditative experiences is the 1,400sq m Patina Wellness facility. Ranging across the entire fourth floor of the 21-storey building is the property’s wellness sanctuary, which offers access to advanced health technology as well as holistic therapies.

The technology treatments on offer include cryotherapy, hyperbaric oxygen and hydrogen therapy, infrared saunas and red light therapy.

There are also six spa treatment rooms for facial and body treatments, as well as a hydrotherapy suite.

Patina Wellness’ fitness centre has Technogym equipment and a movement studio for aerial yoga classes and mindfulness sessions.

The 20-metre indoor pool, which has views of Osaka Castle, is where meditation workshops and water-based exercise classes are held.

A spokesperson for Capella Hotel Group told Spa Business: "We cater to those who value both relaxation and proactive health management. Our wellness programmes are designed for discerning guests who prioritise their physical and mental vitality – from wellness enthusiasts and busy professionals seeking rejuvenation to health-conscious travellers eager to enhance their wellbeing during their stay."

Patina Wellness offers a limited number of memberships for ongoing access to its wellbeing facilities, as well as other hotel offerings.

For example, members can experience the hotel’s diverse range of dining options, from the signature restaurant, P72, that serves cuisine honouring Japan’s 72 micro-seasons to a teppanyaki experience at the Barin dining venue.

Creative programming and merchandising

Patina Osaka plans to offer a rotating exhibition space for established and emerging artists, a creator-in-residence programme and regular programming for celebrations in art, music, fashion and gastronomy.

The hotel also has a Listening Room. Brooklyn-based sound designer Devon Turnbull (also known as OJAS) has curated a selection of vinyl records that reflect the principle of “kanso”, meaning simplicity. These are played on high-fidelity sound systems that have been hand-built by Turnbull.

Soundscapes played between 6-10am are free and exclusively for hotel guests. For a two-hour slot between 2-11pm, the price for visitors and hotel guests is JP¥38,000 (US$258, €223, £194). The capacity for these sessions is 10 people at a time.

Patina Osaka also recently partnered with Osaka-born artist Verdy. The graphic designer’s art has featured on products for Louis Vuitton, Beats by Dr Dre and other well-known brands. Verdy created a collection of sustainable T-shirts, a jacket and stickers for Patina Osaka to sell at its retail shop.

Capella Hotel Group’s expansion plans

The Singapore-based Capella Hotel Group recently appointed former Six Senses CEO Neil Jacobs as a senior strategic advisor to provide support as the hotel management company expands its footprint of hotels under both the Capella and Patina brands.

• Capella Galaxy Macau, China, located within an integrated resort complex, is scheduled to open later this year.
• Capella Kyoto, Japan, will open in the historic Miyagawa-chō district in 2026.
• Capella Florence, Italy, will mark the brand’s European debut in 2027.

Jacobs said: "Capella has established a distinctive position by creating hotels that are true expressions of their destinations, whilst Patina addresses the growing demand for transformative luxury experiences that foster genuine connections. As we expand both brands into critical markets like Japan and Europe, our strategic imperative is leveraging this dual-brand architecture – Capella's cultural immersion and Patina's experiential innovation – to capture different segments of the luxury market whilst maintaining the intimacy that drives loyalty across both portfolios.”
