Roller coaster ride continues for Disneyland Hong Kong as park closes for third time in 2020

There is no reopening date in sight for Hong Kong Disneyland, after it was forced to shut its doors again last week.

It is the third time in 2020 that the park has closed its doors due to the coronavirus pandemic, as local health authorities have been dealing with multiple waves of infections.

The latest cluster of COVID-19 cases began to emerge in mid-November, which came shortly after stricter measures that had been in place since June had been eased.

As group gatherings anywhere in Hong Kong were reduced to just two people, Disney decided to shut it gates.

According to Disney officials, the closures are particularly disappointing as the Hong Kong resort only unveiled its new centrepiece – the reimagined Castle of Magic Dreams – to the public on November 21.

The Castle of Magic is at the heart of a six-year, HK$10.9bn (€1.16bn, US$1.4bn, £1.04bn) investment in the park.

"As required by the government and in line with preventive efforts taking place across Hong Kong, Hong Kong Disneyland park is temporarily closed from December 2, 2020," the park said in a statement.

"We are in close contact with health authorities and the government about the situation and will announce a reopening date once they determine it is advisable.

"The resort hotels and Inspiration Lake Recreation Centre will remain open with adjusted level of services.

"Enhanced health and safety measures that reflect the guidance of health and government authorities will remain in place, such as social distancing measures and increased cleaning and disinfecting."
