Wandsworth Council approves two Nine Elms development projects

Wandsworth Council has approved plans for two major development projects in London's Nine Elms regeneration area - One Nine Elms and New Covent Garden Market.

Both planning applications were given the go ahead by members of the council's planning committee on 18 June and will complement a range of other projects proposed for the area.

While New Covent Garden Market's existing facilities will be upgraded, a mixed-use element is being planned for land no longer required for market operation.

Cafés, bars and a 200-bedroom hotel will be developed, while rooftop sports pitches and a gym are also included in the plans drawn up by Covent Garden Market Authority.

One Nine Elms will lead to the replacement of a 1970s tower block with two new towers housing a hotel and a public viewing level at the top of the tallest (58-storey) tower.

Facilities on the ground floor will be located around a public square lined with shops, cafés, bars and restaurants. Around 50 per cent of the entire site will be public realm.

The development is a joint venture by CIT and Green Properties, with Kohn Pedersen Fox behind the design. The landscape architects are Martha Schwarz Partners.

Nick Cuff, chair of Wandsworth Council's planning committee, said: "Each new development will create new homes, new open spaces and new job opportunities for local people."
