A 24-year-old man has died after being taken ill while swimming at an outdoor pool in Hitchin, Hertfordshire.
The incident took place on Sunday 19 June at the Hitchin Swimming Pool, which is operated by DC Leisure on behalf of North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC).
According to a spokesperson for NHDC, the man got into difficulties in the deep end of the pool and was assisted from the water by staff who administered first aid.
Following the emergency procedures and efforts to resuscitate him, the man was taken to the Lister Hospital in Stevenage, where he was announced dead
on arrival.
A statement from NHDC said: “An investigation has been launched by DC Leisure and they will be co-operating with the police in their separate inquiry.”
During the day – recorded as the hottest of the year in many parts of the UK – the outdoor pool attracted around 1,500 sunbathers and swimmers.
According to the coroner’s report, the man didn’t drown but suffocated on his own vomit.
