The AMI stadium at Addington in Christchurch, New Zealand won the Project of the Year Award at the Stadium Business Awards 2013.
The NZ$30m (£15m, €17m, US$23m) stadium was built as a temporary solution after two devastating earthquakes in 2010/2011 left the city without any major outdoor gathering venue for sport and entertainment.
Populous designed the 18,000 seat stadium at an existing sporting ground at Addington which was constructed in less than 100 days, in time for the Canterbury Crusaders first home game of the 2012 Super Rugby season.
Using stadium components from other venues around New Zealand, the pitch was recycled from the main Christchurch Stadium, while temporary seating was provided by the nation's largest sporting venue, Eden Park. Carisbrook Stadium in Dunedin supplied the lighting towers.
Commenting on the design, Populous said it had drawn on its experience with the London 2012 Olympic Games to create a unique gathering place in Christchurch, using fabric and graphics to embrace the temporary nature of the stadium and give it a special identity.
Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister, Gerry Brownlee congratulated everyone involved in the development of the stadium. "To be awarded Project of the Year alongside the operators of famous facilities across the globe is huge recognition for all those who set out, and achieved, construction of a stadium for Christchurch in under 100 days," added Brownlee.
