Heineken is buying Russia's third largest brewer, Bravo International for up to £276m, gaining a foothold in Russia's beer market. Started in 1999 in St Petersburg, Bravo already produces more than 5 per cent of Russia's beer in three brands: Ohota, Botchkarov and Lowenbrau. Russia, which produced a total volume of over 60 million hectolitres in 2001, is expected to become the world's fifth-largest beer market. The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval but is expected to close by the end of March.
