An appeal court has redefined guidelines under which employees can claim stress related compensation. The ruling is clear: employees who feel under stress at work should inform their employers and give them a chance to take action. If they suffer in silence a claim is less likely to succeed. The judgment saw two teachers and a factory worker, unable to return to their jobs because of stress-related illnesses, stripped of awards totalling nearly £200,000. A fourth award was upheld; the employee had complained of her intolerable workload but nothing had been done. The TUC's senior health and safety policy officer, Owen Tudor said: 'We will make sure our members know that the Court of Appeal has urged them not to suffer in silence, but get their complaints about bullying, overwork, inadequate training and unrealistic deadlines on record.'
