Healthhaus harbours high hopes for Jersey market
POSTED 31 Mar 2014 . BY Jak Phillips
A new high-end health club in Jersey is hoping to attract the island’s many corporate employees, as well as its ageing population, with a 360-degree approach to wellness.

Healthhaus, a 10,860sq ft (1,009sq m) centre attached to the island’s Hotel de France and ayurvedic-themed spa, is the brainchild of Glenda Rivoallan who is operating the facility on a 10-year lease.

The fitness industry veteran, who has overseen the opening of 227 clubs during her 20-year career as a health club consultant, said she wants to provide a total wellness offering where members can feel as comfortable as they would in their own home.

On joining the £100-a-month club, which opened for business on 24 March, members are given a one-to-one screening with resident chiropractor Dr Sam Jackson, who examines movement analysis, respiratory function, cardio capacity, blood pressure and cholesterol.

They are given a tailored workout plan, while anyone found to have serious health concerns receives a fast-track referral, either to their own GP or Jersey’s only consultant cardiologist Dr Andrew Mitchell.

The workout space is centred around two Milon strength endurance circuits, which offer HIIT-influenced 35-minute workout sessions.

The Milon package also comes with chip card control, meaning the equipment automatically adjusts to individual body sizes and training plans, totally eliminating the prospect of user error affecting settings.

In addition, staff are able to monitor live feeds of which machines are being used and how, while the Milon package comes with customer care software which colour codes members and offers prompts to aid with retention.

The rest of the workout space is decked out with Technogym functional strength equipment and Jordan soft boxing products, as well as cardio and strength gear from Life Fitness and Matrix respectively.

The gym also offers weekly educational clinics covering stretching, free weights, functional training and kinetics, which members are free to attend should they wish to brush up their knowledge on a specific area.

Squaring the 360-degree wellness circle is the health-food focused members lounge, with all nourishment provided by the chefs in the Hotel de France kitchen.

“We’re a 900-capacity club and we’d attracted 500 members by the time we opened, so clearly there was a demand for a high-end health club offering in Jersey,” Rivoallan told Health Club Management.

“We want to offer the very best in wellness and have a vision for healthy living, which, given Jersey’s ageing population and number of corporations eager to look after their staff, seems to have struck a chord.

“Being fully-aligned with the hotel and spa puts us in a strong position to offer 360-degree wellness and we hope to take this further once the club is fully up and running.”
