Historic Swiss Art Nouveau hotel gets sleek spa and wellness area in major refurb
POSTED 22 Jul 2016 . BY Jane Kitchen
First opened in 1909, the historic Royal Savoy Lausanne was completely refurbished over a period of five years to the tune of CHF100m (US$101m, €92m, £77m)
A new 1,500sq m (16,146sq ft) Spa Du Royal at the recently refurbished Art Nouveau landmark hotel Royal Savoy Lausanne in Switzerland has opened.

Le Spa Du Royal features eight treatment rooms, a wet zone with indoor and outdoor pools, vitality pools, and several hammams, saunas and steam rooms. A special “Ladies Only” spa features relaxation and treatment rooms, and the spa also includes a fitness room, hairdresser and spa boutique.

The spa features treatments from La Clinic Lemanic, which provides cosmetic, regenerative, preventative and anti-ageing treatments. Golden Rejuvenation is a modern electro-hydrolysis method of slowing down skin ageing and regenerating scar tissue, and involves using 18-carat gold electrodes to transmit a harless electric signal through the skin.

Treatments from skincare brands La Vallee, Biologique Recherche and Aromatherapy Associates are also available. The menu includes massages, lymphatic drainage, foot acupressure and hydrotherapy, as well as alternative treatments such as energy, bodywork and structural therapy.

Jocelyn Pedersen, a 23-year spa veteran, has been named spa manager. Pedersen was previously spa training manager for Six Senses, and was opening the Six Senses Alpina Gstaad.

First opened in 1909, the historic Royal Savoy Lausanne was completely refurbished over a period of five years to the tune of CHF100m (US$101m, €92m, £77m), in close collaboration with the Swiss Heritage council. Interior designer Maria Vafiadis, founder of MKV Design, led the project, which is described as a “complete reinvention” of the property.

Work included turning former attic maid bedrooms into bedrooms and suites, as well as transforming the Royal Salon, the hotel’s former restaurant, into an event venue.

The project also included adding a new contemporary building, which added 95 bedrooms and suites, in the Garden Wing, which is where the spa is located. The hotel now offers a total of 196 hotel rooms, with 101 in the historic building.

During the facade’s cleanup, workers uncovered a mosaic strip under the plasterwork, and specialised craftsmen were tasked to restore the mosaic to its former glory.

The Hotel Royal Savoy Lausanne is part of the Burgenstock Selection, operated by Katara Hospitality Switzerland AG on behalf of Qatar investors. It opened its doors after the refurbishment in November 2015.
