Louvre Abu Dhabi hit with further delays, opening pushed back to 2017
POSTED 06 Nov 2016 . BY Tom Anstey
Water is a key part of the Jean Nouvel-designed building, with a system based on ancient Arabic engineering being used to allow water to flow between the outer areas of the museum and to the galleries inside
The long-awaited Louvre Abu Dhabi has been delayed yet again, with the highly-anticipated project now postponed to 2017 due to pending construction work.

The news is the latest in a string of setbacks for the project dating back to 2012. According to Reuters, multiple sources have reported there is still “work to be done” on the museum.

Government officials had said at the end of 2015 that the museum was on course for a mid-2016 handover, with an amended opening date for the end of this year.

The sources confirmed that the museum’s opening was once again postponed to an unspecified date in 2017.

The under development museum took a major step forward in June when the temporary sea wall surrounding the structure came down, flooding the area around the Jean Nouvel-designed building, which gives the illusion of floating on water.

Work on the iconic structure’s roof was completed in October last year, along with all 9,200sq m (99,000sq ft) of the museum’s galleries, plus the concrete work for the basement levels and security screening facility through which vehicles will transport artwork.

Louvre Abu Dhabi will be the anchor for the under-development Saadiyat Cultural District, with the Zayed National Museum and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi to follow in its footsteps.
Construction delays have been blamed for the latest opening delay
