£15m Rhyl waterpark plans approved
POSTED 01 Feb 2017 . BY Tom Anstey
The waterpark will attract an extra 350,000 visitors to Rhyl each year Credit: Denbighshire County Council
Plans for a £15m (US$18.9m, €17.5m) waterpark in Rhyl, Wales, have been given the go-ahead by local councillors.

The plans were approved by Denbighshire County Council (DCC) following a vote, which considered one option with a 25m, eight-lane swimming pool, and another without – the council choosing the latter option.

Slated to open in 2019 with a groundbreaking in September this year, the proposal includes indoor and outdoor waterslides, a children’s water play area and dry facilities, including a climbing wall, activity zone and function rooms.

The 1,200sq m (13,000sq ft) waterpark will also include a water space with beach-style entry and two interactive play areas, as well as a dedicated area for young children. Slides will include a free-fall, family tube ride and four-lane multi slide.

The park, which will be open year-round, will offer outdoor options for the summer months, with a sun deck, seating terrace, beach changing huts, a bar and terrace, as well as outdoor splash pads.

According to the project developers, the waterpark will attract an extra 350,000 visitors to Rhyl each year, generating more than £1.7m (US$2.1m, €2m) for the local economy.

Alliance Leisure have been involved in the project from inception, supporting feasibility, design and more, being appointed the council's delivery partner from concept to completion.

The project will be largely funded by DCC with additional funding of £2m (US$2.5m, €2.3m) from Rhyl Town Council and £800,000 (US$1m, €935,000) from the Welsh government.

Further will be used to relocate the site’s existing skate park and paddling pool, which will move as part of the town’s waterfront regeneration project. DCC has said it will consult with the youth of Rhyl on the design of the new skate park.
