Luxury hotel group Aman has announced its long-awaited urban property in New York City will welcome guests as of 2 August 2022.

Aman New York will open in the 1921 Crown Building on Fifth Avenue and 57th Street, overlooking the city’s iconic Central Park. The destination will be topped with a three-storey, 2,300sq m Aman Spa.

The 26-storey Crown Building – designed by architects Warren and Wetmore, who also designed the city’s Grand Central Station – is a celebrated example of Beaux-Arts architecture in New York, and was formerly the first home of the Museum of Modern Art.

Spa in the city
According to Aman, the hotel spa will define an entirely new and all-encompassing approach to wellness in the city.

The facility will be anchored by an indoor swimming pool flanked by firepits and alcoves of double daybeds, all illuminated by striking copper light installations.

Guests will be able to visit comprehensive private facilities in the form of two Spa Houses, along with a traditional Russian banya, hammam, saunas, ice fountains, sensory showers and steamrooms.

The offering will be completed with hair care and nail care services and an outdoor terrace with hot and cold plunge pools, cabanas, daybeds and fireplaces.

Guests, residents and Aman Club members will be able to visit the seven-treatment-room spa – each of which is equipped with Clinician Premier treatment tables supplied by spa and wellness equipment manufacturer Oakworks.

Vladislav Doronin, chair and CEO of Aman, says: “Following the success of Aman Tokyo, our strategy to bring the Aman lifestyle to urban destinations continues apace.

“A milestone opening, Aman New York marks our greatest investment into a single destination to date. The hotel introduces an entirely new concept to the city through expansive and unmatched amenities, which propels the brand forward, delivering a guest experience like no other.”

Design inspiration
Architect Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston – who has worked on several other Aman resorts – is conceptualising the property’s design. The destination will be the first Aman location in the world with urban residences.

Gathy’s design brief seeks to pay homage to the building’s stately architecture and history, bridging the ethos of Aman in the heart of one of the western world’s most bustling metropolises.

The hotel’s 83 suites will be inspired by the airy architecture of Aman’s properties in Southeast Asia. In line with this, interiors have been completed with organic, natural materials and muted tones.

The hotel is said to be the second in a new, pioneering generation of Aman properties in urban settings, following in the footsteps of Aman Tokyo and taking the brand to 34 properties worldwide.

Aman New York joins Amangani in Wyoming and Amangiri in Utah as the brand’s third destination in the US. The trio will soon be accompanied by Aman Miami, opening in 2024.

Amenities
On entering Aman New York, guests will ascend to the hotel’s 14th floor, where a Gathy-designed double-height atrium has been installed to instil a sense of grandeur while connecting spaces for socialising.

The property's gastronomic options will consist of an Italian restaurant, a wine library and a fine-dining Japanese dining experience, all linked by a wraparound Garden Terrace.

Featuring reflective pools and firepits, the 650sq m outdoor space will be finished with a retracting glass roof to allow year-round access.

Meanwhile, an exclusive Jazz Club will accommodate world-class live performances, reinventing a classic New York experience and serving as a nightly gathering place.
