Basecamp Resorts increases investment to CA$50 million for expansion of Everwild wellness concept

Since opening in November, we’re tracking well above our spa guest targets, gross profit has significantly increased, and our hotel ADR (average daily rate) has exceeded budget
– Sky Mitchell, founder and CEO of Basecamp Resorts and Everwild
Basecamp Resorts shares plans for three new facilities across Canada
Strong performance at Everwild property validates the concept
Increased equity investment ensures the three further sites offer the best destination spa experience

Canadian operator Basecamp Resorts has revealed details for three new Nordic wellness hospitality sites under its Everwild brand and is increasing its investment in the developments to CA$50 million (US$37.5 million, €34.5 million, £29 million) from CA$20 million (US$15 million, €13.8 million, £11.6 million).

At the end of last year, Basecamp Resorts unveiled the first Everwild concept property called Everwild Canmore. The property has a renovated 99-key hotel and a new 40,000sq ft thermal wellness facility that is expected to welcome 78,000 visitors annually. The spa’s installation cost CA$27 million (US$19.6 million, €16.8 million, £13.8 million).

Sky Mitchell, founder and CEO of Basecamp Resorts and Everwild, told Spa Business exclusively how  strong performance in Canmore is validating the concept: “Canmore has surpassed every benchmark we set. Since opening in November, we’re tracking well above our spa guest targets, gross profit has significantly increased, and our hotel ADR (average daily rate) has exceeded budget – with occupancy also up year-over-year.

“What’s been particularly exciting is seeing the halo effect in real time: the spa is driving direct hotel bookings higher and January alone came in well over budget, primarily from increased throughput. That kind of validation gives us enormous confidence as we move into Fernie, Banff and Harmony. We know the model works – a spa-first destination that drives year-round demand, smooths out shoulder seasons and creates a compelling reason to visit the mountains in every season. Now it’s about scaling that thoughtfully across Western Canada and eventually beyond.”

Investment

Mitchell is the general partner at the Wildwood Investment Fund, which was created to support the development of new Everwild properties. It operates as a separate entity to Basecamp Resorts and is structured as a limited partnership.

The fund, which stands at CA$20 million, is targeting a total equity raise of approximately CA$50 million for the three new sites under development across the country, in Fernie, Banff and Harmony in Calgary. Smaller allocations originally made for Banff and Harmony will now be balanced out.

Capital is being raised through retail investors across Canada and the exit is expected in 2030.

Mitchell McLean added: “Through the Wildwood Investment Fund, we’re able to grow the Everwild platform in a way that supports both local economies and the future of wellness hospitality in Western Canada and North America.”

Three new properties

Basecamp sees the Everwild sites as a collection of place-based wellness destinations designed to foster relaxation and meaningful connection. They each feature accommodation, thermal experiences and communal resting spaces, as well as dining and programming experiences.

• Everwild Fernie Nordic Spa and Hotel

The Everwild Fernie Nordic Spa and Hotel will open in Fernie, British Columbia, in Q3 2027. The property is being developed in Elk Valley, surrounded by mountains called the Lizard Range.

It will have a 70-key hotel and around 37,000sq ft of indoor and outdoor spa facilities. It’s expected to generate 70 jobs and welcome 55,000 visitors annually.

The spa will have five treatment rooms, an area for exfoliation and exterior facilities such as two large hot pools, a cold pool, various saunas, a steamroom, four fire gardens and relaxation spaces.

Architecture is by Systemic Architecture Inc while spa and interior design remain internal to the Everwild and Basecamp teams. The design reflects its alpine environment and the rustic mountain town character of Fernie.

• Everwild Banff Nordic Spa and Hotel

The Everwild Banff Spa and Hotel will open in Q4 of 2027 in Alberta with two floors of spa facilities, plus a rooftop thermal circuit with views of Banff National Park. The wellness facilities, which also comprise cave-like interiors, will have a footprint of around 34,000sq ft.

There will be an exterior spa area including hot and cold pools, fire gardens, relaxation lounge areas and an event sauna. Inside, there will be a steam and mud treatment room, saunas, a thermal shower circuit, an ice lounge and more saunas.

The development will also include the reimagination of an existing 21-room hotel and the addition of a restaurant, with architecture also by Systemic. The design is inspired by Banff’s historic mineral spring heritage and Rocky Mountain geology, with carved cave-like spaces featuring layered rock formations.

• Everwild Harmony Nordic Spa and Hotel

Harmony Village, west of Calgary in Alberta, will host the Everwild Harmony Nordic Spa and Hotel when it opens in Q1 2028.

Set on the shores of Harmony Lake, the 5.5-acre site will have 138,000sq ft of wellness space, including 16 treatment rooms. It is set to become the flagship for the Everwild brand, employing up to 300 people and welcoming approximately 200,000 visitors in its first year of operation.

The Nordic wellness experience at this destination spa hotel will have a thermal circuit featuring steamrooms, hot and cold pools, hydrotherapy facilities and curated wellness rituals. There will be various saunas, some of which will float on the lake, a salt flotation pool, lakefront relaxation zones, fire gardens and three docks to facilitate access to the water.

With architecture by DAAS Architecture, the property will also have a 26-room hotel and a restaurant with capacity for 225 seats. The design inspiration comes from European farmhouses, using warm wood, textured masonry and metal detailing that connects the lakeshore and Alberta prairie landscape.
