CES news: 'age-tech' among the emerging markets on show

"Age-tech" has been identified as one of the emerging markets which could shape future innovations in the wellness and fitness technology sector.

The rapidly growing ageing populations in developed economies have resulted in a number of companies exploring ways to assist the elderly through technology.

The topic of age-tech has been on the agenda at this year's annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES), where innovation has focused on four categories – services purchased by older people; services purchased on behalf of older people; services traded between older and younger people; and services delivered to future older people.

Among the companies to exhibit wellness-related age-tech this year is AARP, which is showcasing a number of health and wellness technologies designed to "empower people 50 and older".

Among these is the HomeFit AR: an augmented reality app that can scan a room and reference AARP's HomeFit guide to discover what improvements can be made to turn the house into a "lifelong home" – devoid of high-safety and mobility risks.

Elsewhere, Sana Health is introducing a neuro-modulation wearable aimed at older people, which uses pulsed light and sound with the aim of reducing chronic pain.
