Mandarin Oriental spas around the world are preparing to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the global Silent Night tradition on 8 December
The annual event sees spas across the group continue to offer their normal treatment menus, however, past 5pm talking and music are no longer permitted
The event serves as a gentle reminder of the importance of silence and quiet reflection, allowing guests to immerse themselves in tranquility and experience peace
In commemoration of this milestone year, Mandarin Oriental spas will host specialist programming and a unveil a new dedicated retreat
Mandarin Oriental will once again host its globally celebrated Silent Night event on 8 December, offering guests a rare chance to disconnect from the holiday chaos and embrace true stillness.

Now in its 10th year, this unique initiative transforms Mandarin Oriental spas worldwide into sanctuaries of complete silence – no music, no conversations and no post-treatment recommendations – allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in mindfulness.

Conceived by Jeremy McCarthy, the group’s director of leisure, spa, and wellness, Silent Night has evolved into a global tradition, attracting those seeking a meaningful respite from the fast-paced world.

Spa Business spoke with McCarthy to revisit the origins of Silent Night and uncover his plans for celebrating this significant milestone.

Silence is golden
The idea for Silent Night was sparked over 20 years ago during a visit to India, where McCarthy became acutely aware of the pervasive effects of noise pollution.

“Noise pollution is often overlooked, yet the World Health Organization links it to serious health issues like heart disease, hypertension, cognitive impairments and mental wellness concerns,” he explains. “For urban dwellers, constant noise is inescapable. Most cope by using earbuds to control what they hear, but true silence has become one of modern life’s rarest luxuries.”

McCarthy drew inspiration for the event’s name from the Christmas carol Silent Night, believed to capture the serene calm of snowfall.

“December is a fitting time to emphasise peace, calm and quiet – concepts often overshadowed by the hectic holiday season,” he notes. “Creating a silent space at the year’s end allows guests to reflect on the past year or set intentions for the year ahead."

McCarthy has long been a steadfast advocate for the transformative benefits of mindfulness, digital detoxing and positive psychology.

In an exclusive interview with Spa Business, he delved into the importance of quiet reflection, the role of positive psychology in wellbeing and how spas can serve as essential spaces for nurturing these practices.Read the full interview here.

Guest responses
Feedback from Silent Night attendees has been overwhelmingly positive over the past decade. Many guests express a preference for silent treatments and appreciate having the spa reframed as a silent sanctuary, where they can reconnect with themselves.

“The theme of silence deeply resonates with our guests,” says McCarthy. “It prompts them to reflect on how urban noise and constant streaming affect their lives and inspires them to seek moments of quiet in their routines.”

Marking the occasion
To commemorate the event's 10th anniversary, Mandarin Oriental spas will introduce expanded programmes on the afternoon and evenings of 8 December, offering an enhanced Silent Retreat.

This exclusive experience will begin with a mindful opening ceremony, followed by wellness activities and silent spa treatments incorporating aromatherapy, sound therapy and meditative movement.

Guests will also be invited to share their personal mindfulness mantras, which will be featured on Mandarin Oriental’s social media platforms.
