Designs submitted for Derby's £42m swimming pool and waterpark
POSTED 22 Aug 2019 . BY Tom Walker
The complex has been designed by architects FaulknerBrowns and is expected to open in 2021
Enhanced designs have been submitted for a £42m swimming pool and waterpark complex in Derby.

Original plans for the Moorways swimming complex – designed by architects FaulknerBrowns – were already approved in early 2018, but the current Conservative administration which took control of Derby City Council (DCC) in May 2018 ordered a review of the project.

The original plans have now been extended to include more leisure water space. This will include a waterpark featuring two four-storey flumes and England’s first wave generating "Wowball" and Waverider slide.

There will also be an indoor water playground and beach area for younger visitors.

The swimming area will house an Olympic-size 50m pool with the flexibility to be divided into three separate 25m pools.

In addition to the 50m pool and waterpark, there will also be a learner pool that can be used for lessons and activities.

Other facilities include a large health club with a gym floor, group exercise studios and wet areas; a café with soft play; and multi-use spaces and areas for community use.

The complex is set to open in 2021.

"The submission of these latest designs to planners is a major step forward for the project," said councillor Robin Wood, DCC cabinet member for leisure.

"The plans have been developed with families in mind and include a number of thrills and spills to enjoy. Once built there will certainly be more ways than ever for everyone to have fun in Derby. We're looking to deliver the new facility as soon as possible."
