Mallorcan monastery hotel adds nature-focused spa

A family-owned hotel set in a monastery dating back to the 12th century is getting a new spa this March.

Son Brull, located on the Spanish island of Mallorca, will add a 350sq m spa with three treatment rooms and a focus on connection with nature.

Designed by Forteza + Aparicio, the newly built spa will have contemporary design elements in wood and stone, but will be sympathetic to the main hotel’s original architecture, using dark colours and contemporary architecture to create an atmosphere of peaceful silence.

The spa is set in a garden surrounded by local flowers and herbs, and includes treatment rooms that overlook the countryside and hills of northern Mallorca. An indoor water circuit will include a pool, whirlpool, sauna and hammam, while a yoga and meditation room will offer complimentary daily group yoga.

Signature treatments and a variety of massages, facials, manicures and pedicures have been developed with oils, scrubs and balms created with the essence of Opuntia Ficus, more commonly known as the prickly pear, which has been part of the Mallorcan landscape for centuries.

The prickly pear will act as the main ingredient in spa products produced on-site, with its seeds used to exfoliate and the oil incorporated for its antioxidant properties. Products will also incorporate other ingredients grown in the on-site garden, and are designed to complement the hotel’s bathroom amenities, which are made with local oranges.

Signature therapies include seasonal rituals designed to reconnect guests with the earth’s natural cycle. Each 135-minute ritual focuses on the current season; for example, the spring treatment (offered from March through May) is called Blooming, and is designed to help guests increase energy and feel revitalised with an intense stretching massage, scrub, body mask and facial, all using the tender leaf of the prickly pear and the essence of its flower. A summer treatment focuses on Vitality, and uses the fruit of the prickly pear, essential oils and aloe vera for freshness and rehydration, and includes an exfoliating full-body wrap, moisturising facial and revitalising body massage.

For those wanting a more immersive spa experience, Son Brull will offer multi-day retreats with a mix of activities from cycling, using the hotel’s fleet of bikes, hiking the Tramuntana mountain range and other outdoor activities. The spa will also be open to non-residents, offering half and full day packages from €175.

Dining at the hotel will also focus on wellbeing with dishes at restaurant 3/65 made from locally produced ingredients and based on the Mediterranean diet.
