US$100m expansion of Inn at Palmetto Bluff to begin later this year

The US$100m (€73.3m, £59.3m) expansion of the Inn at Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton, South Carolina, could begin as early as Q3 this year, if the 150-room design receives the town’s approval.

The 28-acre (11.3-hectare) hotel and spa complex is owned by Crescent Communities, a real estate investment firm.

“Construction could start between July and September, but it will probably start in Q4 after site preparation and demolition of the existing spa where the new inn will be,” said senior vice president of development for Crescent Communities, David Muenks in a statement.

A temporary spa will be constructed in two of the complex’s cottages during the construction of the new wellness centre within the hotel. The cottages will be converted back afterwards.

The current 9,500sq ft (883sq m) Spa at Palmetto Bluff is built in the style of a Southern manor home, on a private island in a freshwater estuary adjacent to the Inn. It features eight treatment rooms, including a couples’ room and a private Vichy steamroom. Each room has its own veranda and bath.

Treatments offered to guests include massage therapy, skincare and body treatments – using ingredients that are indigenous to the area, such as cornmeal, peaches, cotton, wild rice and red river clay.

The main inn area, consisting of three buildings, will include 74 rooms, the new spa, a restaurant, fitness facility, meeting rooms and a ballroom.

Across the street, a new 200-seat chapel will be erected, near to a ‘carriage house’ which will contain an additional eight rooms.

The inn’s current 50 cottages will accompany five new two-storey buildings – comprising 54 more rooms – across the lagoon.

14 more rooms will be built in place of restrooms and showers at the fitness pool nearby. Those facilities will be reconstructed along the sides of the main inn, along with four new pools and a pool bar.
