Blackpool is to get a new multi-million pound sports centre thanks to £4.4m from the Sport England Lottery Fund. The £5.4m Palantine Leisure Centre will include a 25m swimming pool with a moveable floor, a sports hall containing a table tennis centre, a gym and consultation facilities for GP referral schemes, with an accompanying rehabilitation suite. The council are contributing £700,000 towards the project, and remaining funding is coming from Blackpool Challenge Partnership as well as local businesses and charities. This is a major boost to the whole town, said council leisure services manager, John Blackledge. The facility represents a shared vision of a number of organisations within the borough and Blackpool as a whole. Work is due to start next September, with the completion of the centre expected in early 2004.
