Following the success of its romantic double deckchair last year, Eastbourne tourism bosses are anticipating future deckchair demand with a new child sized version created by Dorset Enterprises.
The 'Wide Boy' deckchair - 'made for the loving couple, when two chairs are just too far apart' - hit the headlines in 2005 and since then interest in the traditional English seaside deckchair is reported to have been so great that a smaller version for youngsters has been introduced.
Eastbourne Borough Council (EBC) spokesperson for tourism, Councillor David Elkin said: “Eastbourne is already a popular resort for families, but with more young couples coming here we anticipate many will return in the future with their children.”
Costing 75p to hire for the day, the new chairs will be available throughout the summer. Anticipating that they will prove to be very popular, EBC has ordered extra for sale as souvenirs.
Made by Bournemouth-based Dorset Enterprises - which works in partnership with the local Borough Council, Jobcentre Plus and various disability agencies in supporting people with disabilities in the manufacture of the company's products - the mini deckchairs come in two sizes and are part of a range of deckchairs and other wooden furniture items available.
Their introduction is part of an ongoing overhaul of beach equipment by EBC, which is targeting families and couples aged 35+ in a ten year strategy to challenge outdated images of the resort and secure additional new audiences for the future.
