UK pubs will be allowed to serve from 5am during the World Cup, to make up for the eight-hour difference between the UK and the event's hosts, Japan and South Korea. The government made the unprecedented announcement after talks with breweries and magistrates. The new experimental drinking regime will last during the finals, being held from 31 May to 30 June 2002, but how many pubs take up the opportunity is likely to depend on the length of England's stay in the Far East. Pubs and bars that want to take up the chance to serve drinks at dawn will have to apply to their local magistrate.
