The hunt for the UK's European Capital of Culture 2008 gets underway as Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell establishes an independent panel to help the government choose the UK's nomination. The Secretary of State is looking for people to assess applications and ensure that the city which wins the honour has the potential to put on an outstanding programme during the year. Cities across the UK have six months to get their applications in and at least 13 cities, including Belfast, Cardiff and Inverness, are known to be applying for the EU programme that allows each Member State to hold the title for a year. I expect a high number of excellent applications from cities throughout the country to become the UK's nomination for the title, said the Culture Secretary. To be European Capital of Culture is an outstanding honour.
