A new programme has been launched to solve the problems of recruitment, retention and skills shortages in the hospitality industry. The hospitality industry employs 1.8m people in the UK, representing £21.5bn in tax revenue to the Treasury, and is predicted to create 310,000 new jobs by 2009. But the industry has problems recruiting and retaining staff. The aim of the Workforce Development Plan, launched by the Hospitality Training Foundation (HtF), the government and key industry figures, is to put a strategy in place over the next five years that will help hospitality employers create an industry that employees will choose over others. It will focus on five areas, which include improving the image of the industry as an employer, promoting career opportunities into, and within the industry and more industry-recognised qualifications.
