The UK government has postponed the reopening of saunas, steamrooms and the recommencement of close-contact services, including facials, until 15 August at the earliest.

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy made the announcement due to infection numbers creeping up, saying it decided to ‘tighten some measures in order to keep the virus under control’.

The rollback means spas should continue to operate temporary treatment menus which exclude treatments in the highest risk zone around the nose and mouth. Indoor and outdoor pools, spa pools and gyms are still allowed remain open.

The beauty industry has hit back after the announcement, as the government has extended the close-contact service industry’s nearly five-month hiatus.

In response, industry figure and influencer, Caroline Hirons, has spearheaded a campaign – called Beauty Backed – to raise funds and drive awareness about the independent businesses and entrepreneurs in the industry that are suffering financially while not being able to operate under current government guidelines.

Hirons launched the initiative after hearing stories about members of the industry who’ve been financially crippled by lockdown, haven't been able to work and need financial support.

With support from The British Beauty Council and BABTAC, the initiative for the UK and Wales has kicked off with a petition, social media campaign and fundraiser.

All donations are being distributed to the Hair and Beauty Charity which will distribute funds to individuals and businesses who apply for help to stay afloat while restrictions are still in place.

“The industry contributes over £28 bn to the economy annually and the way it has been so mercilessly let down will not stand,” she said.

“With the support of industry experts and influencers, Beauty Backed is raising money, support and awareness for the therapists, clinics, aestheticians, and makeup artists unable to work due to the government’s lack of support and understanding of the power, loyalty and expertise in our industry.

“The aim is to get beauty up and working again,” concluded Hirons.
