Buckingham Chilterns University Colleges (BCUC) in the UK has just launched a new foundation degree in spa management, aimed at those in the industry who wish to gain a management qualification.

The two-year Spa and Therapy Management course covers a wide variety of topics, starting with a study of the cultural and historical context of spas.

Students then progress to more practical areas. The health and safety module covers standards and regulations applicable to sports and recreation industries. The water and therapy management module looks at the physiological effects and benefits of water-based treatments, health and safety and water treatment procedure.

During the remainder of the course, students will learn management skills and understand the consumer experience – with particular emphasis on how to respond to, and manage, a diverse client base while promoting a positive spa culture and ethos.

Year two begins with a work-based learning project, followed by an introduction to marketing and sales. Finance, people, product and treatment management are the skills taught in the remaining study modules. Finally, Europe-based students will undertake an in-depth project via a guided residential trip.

The foundation degree programme is a government initiative, widely recognised by an industry that is based on the principle of learning while you work.
