It will also have a studio, offering a mix of classes – from movement to mindfulness, designed for every pace and preference.
The property will open on July 1
Champneys already has eight spa locations in the UK
Champneys will open its first European property in decades on 1 July at the new 135-key Gran Marbella Resort and Beach Club, on Real de Zaragoza beach in Spain.

The resort is owned and operated by Iconic Luxury Hotels, which owns properties such as Cliveden House and Chewton Glen in the UK, as well as hotels in Palm Beach and Venice and is part of London and Regional Properties.

The new Champneys Wellness Spa will feature seven treatment rooms, a sauna, steamroom and an indoor swimming pool.

The spa will also have a studio, offering a mix of classes – from movement to mindfulness – designed for every pace and preference.

The design and concept for the space will pay homage to its Andalusian surroundings, merging the Champneys' experience with a Mediterranean vibe.

Guests can expect a spa menu that features Champneys' signature treatments, in addition to new coastal-inspired experiences designed specifically for the new spa.

"As we celebrate 100 years of Champneys this year, it felt like the perfect time to expand our expertise into Europe," said Alan Whiteley, CEO of Champneys.

The property – formerly the Vincci Estrella del Mar – was acquired by London and Regional in 2016 and is being rebranded and refurbished.

Champneys has eight locations in the UK, including four spa resorts, two spa hotels and two city spa locations. It previously had a spa in Brussels, announced a property for Marbella in 2008, in partnership with British development company Casa Nita SL, that did not ultimately open and considered a Caribbean development in 2010.

It rolled out its city spa concept in places such as Bath, Tunbridge Wells and Cambridge UK, but these closed during the pandemic.

Champneys had a seven-year deal with Sainsbury's for the sale of branded products, moving this contract to Boots in 2011.

Champneys was founded in 1925 as a Nature Cure resort by pioneering naturopath, Stanley Lief who bought the original property at Tring from the Rothschilds. It was acquired by the current owners, led by Stephen Purdew, in 2002.

Champneys appointed bankers from Cavendish to assess options for a sale – rumoured to carry a price tag of £250 million – in late 2024.

Champneys Group accounts show a loss of £8,480,773 for 2024, following a loss of £5,045,406 in 2023. It made a profit of £834,774 in 2022.
