Scotland's Gleddoch Hotel spa relaunches with huge outdoor sauna
POSTED 29 May 2025 . BY Helen Andrews
The renovation of the Imperia Spa has been led by 3Design Scotland Credit: Gleddoch Golf and Spa Resort
There will be seven treatment rooms and one of the UK's largest outdoor saunas
The spa will also have its own restaurant and an orangery with rare palm plants
Thermal facilities have been supplied by Anapos and Brass Monkey
Skincare and treatments will be provided by Natura Bissé, Elemis, Temple Spa and Ayurvedic specialists Tri-Dosha
Gleddoch Golf and Spa Resort will open its renovated Imperia Spa in early June within the 350-acre estate in Scotland that once belonged to shipbuilding magnate Baron Lithgow.

Just 20 minutes from Glasgow, the spa – which was first opened in 2017 – has been re-imagined by 3Design Scotland as part of a multi-million pound investment with the aesthetic of gold, black and marble, inspired by the salons of Europe’s grand hotels.

When it reopens in June the spa will have seven treatment rooms – an increase on the original six as a couples suite has been partitioned into two rooms.

Skincare and treatments will be provided by Natura Bissé, Elemis, Temple Spa and Ayurvedic specialists Tri-Dosha.

Guests will be offered fresh mint towels on arrival, with the reception having a signature fragrance of Persian jasmine.

A major investment has been made to install one of the largest outdoor saunas in the UK (45sq m) with panoramic views of the Clyde Estuary, the Renfrewshire hills and Ben Lomond. The spa remained closed for the majority of the refurbishment, with two of the property's bedrooms repurposed to enable the delivery of treatments.

The indoor pool has been retiled in gold and black with a mirrored ceiling and recessed lighting and will be available for guests, along with the existing outdoor hydrotherapy pool.

Contrast bathing options at the property have been updated. There was previously a sauna and a steamroom, which have been replaced with a Himalayan salt sauna, an aromatic steamroom, a salt steamroom, an ice fountain, an ice bath, an experience shower and a barrel drench shower – supplied by Anapos and Brass Monkey.

For relaxation, the spa has heated loungers and an open-air lounge on the veranda. The structure of the spa's relaxation conservatory remains the same but it now houses the new pink Himalayan salt sauna and a separate bar area as part of the refurbishment.

The spa will also have its own restaurant and a wellbeing studio. The existing fitness centre remains, with new equipment by Technogym replacing Matrix and a Peloton bike.

In total, the indoor spa facilities will measure 1,118sq m spa – 790sq m indoors and 320sq m outdoors.

Gleddoch’s GM, James Anderson, said: "The opening of the Imperia Spa marks the culmination of a vision to create a destination that defines its own standard of luxury. Every moment and detail has been considered to transport guests to another world."

Gleddoch Golf and Spa Resort

The 76-bed property, which became a hotel in 1974, is also home to an 18-hole championship golf course and a 16-bay driving range. It has hosted many VIPs, including the late Queen, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and football team Real Madrid.

The Glendoch House Hotel was bought by the Johal family in 2015 and renamed Gleddoch Golf and Spa Resort. It was refurbished in 2017 when the spa was first opened.

The property is part of the Best Western's luxury hotel collection, WorldHotels.
