The Wellness Tourism Association (WTA) has recognised its first Wellness Destination
Antigua and Barbuda has become the first destination recognized by the WTA after meeting its nine-point list of requirements
The Wellness Destination checklist seeks to ensure that wellness is deeply integrated into a location's community and local economy, prioritising both physical and mental wellbeing
Antigua & Barbuda has been recognised as the first location globally to earn the ‘Wellness Destination’ designation from the Wellness Tourism Association (WTA).

The WTA defines a Wellness Destination as “a geographical area that fosters and promotes wellness as an integral part of life within the community and the region’s economy.”

The title was awarded after Antigua & Barbuda successfully met the WTA’s nine-point Wellness Destination checklist, developed in 2019, to evaluate locations aspiring to become hubs for wellness tourism. The criteria is designed to ensure that wellness is deeply integrated into the community and local economy, prioritising both physical and mental wellbeing.

The association hopes that by recognising locations like Antigua & Barbuda, more regions will be encouraged to adopt similar wellness practices, further shaping the future of wellness travel.

The Wellnesss Destinaion framework
Abundant Natural Assets: Featuring accessible wellness-focused attractions like beaches, forests, hot springs and mountains, ideal for activities such as thalassotherapy.
Diverse Fitness Activities: Catering to wellness seekers with options such as yoga, cycling, kayaking and more.
Serene Environment: Delivering an escape from modern life’s stresses, with tranquil settings for peace and relaxation.
Access to Wellness Professionals: Offering expertise in holistic and alternative healing therapies.
Safe and Secure Environment: Ensuring that both locals and visitors feel protected and at ease.
Clean and Sanitary Infrastructure: Maintaining high health and hygiene standards for all.
Enhanced Quality of Life for Locals: Supporting the community through job creation and the promotion of locally produced goods and services.
Sustainability Practices: Upholding eco-friendly policies that prioritise the planet’s wellbeing.
Healthful Dining Options: Providing fresh, locally sourced and clean-eating cuisine.

Anne Dimon, WTA president and CEO, said: “As wellness tourism continues to grow, it’s crucial that travellers understand the experiences and offerings available at each destination.

“The WTA’s check-list provides a foundation for any region that aspires to be recognised as a true Wellness Destination, ensuring both visitors and locals benefit from the experience.”

Colin C. James, CEO of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, added: “We’re incredibly excited and honoured to be named as a Wellness Destination by the WTA. With our pristine beaches, lush landscapes and peaceful environments, Antigua and Barbuda offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and tranquillity.

“This designation allows us to further solidify our position as a premier destination for wellness tourism, offering a variety of rejuvenating experiences tailored to the needs of today’s wellness traveller.”
