The Polurrian Hotel, an independent property in southwest Cornwall, UK, has started construction on a £10 million (US$12.7 million, €11.7 million) extension of its leisure facilities, including a spa and hydropool with a semi-retractable roof.

The 47-key property is part of The Loxley Collection, a portfolio of properties owned by British businessman Andrew Long, founder of Extra Motorway Service Group, who moved into the hotel sector in 2022.

Also being developed at the Polurrian are a 120-person function space, 10 additional family suite-style bedrooms and a dining terrace.

Construction has started on the spa and fitness centre, which will be accessible from the hotel, with a 15x7-metre infinity pool with a 3x7-metre hydropool section, under a semi-retractable glass roof. There will be five treatment rooms and a relaxation suite. Additional wet facilities will include a sauna and a steamroom. A new gym is also part of the plan.

Some of the existing facilities have received upgrades already and will be available for use while the main experiences are created, with an expected opening date of March 2027.

Nevada Construction, a Devon and Cornwall-based building contractor, is working on the project, which has been designed by architects KTM Architecture. The wet facilities are being designed and installed by H2O Pools, which is based in Exeter.

The existing leisure building will then be repurposed into self-contained holiday cottages.

The spa will operate as a new sub-brand of the Polurrian Hotel.

The spa will also offer a sauna on the hotel’s privately-owned beach at Polurrian Cove.

The company also owns The White Hart Hotel, a 51-room property in Lincoln, which it acquired in July 2022. This has planning permission for a new spa and pool development – currently under construction and due to open in early 2027. Read more about this project here.

Hotel Victoria in Robin Hood’s Bay, in Whitby, joined the collection in October 2023 and two Victorian houses next-door have been acquired to create a 30-key property, which opened in April 2025. There are plans to convert a stable block into spa facilities at some point, including treatment rooms, sauna, plunge pool and jet pools.
